Developments today were pointing to Sebring as a definite choice
over
Winter Park
as a permanent winter home and play ground for
members of the exclusive and nationally-famous Lake Placid Country club. Though news of
the actual purchase of Harder Hall has
not been made, positive indications point to a location for the
Lake
Placid colony at a "location in Sebring." Winter
quarters of the club should be definitely located by this time next season, The
American has been informed. After visiting more than one hundred
cities in
Florida
, Dr. Melville Dewey of
Lake Placid
,
N.Y.
addressed
the Rotarians at their regular
luncheon in the Hotel Sebring
Monday, on the value of Sebring
as a recreational center. Dr.
Dewey
has been spending the past week in
this city and in making a survey of the Ridge section. He
sent out questionnaires to members of the
Lake Placid Country Club asking
their preferred location in the
State of
Florida
, and out of 200
replies Dr. Dewey finds that 90
per cent prefer the Scenic Highlands, practically all of them mentioning two points in
particular,
Winter Park
and principally Sebring. "
Highlands
county is far
ahead of anything else in the state when it comes to selecting site for
a fashionable hotel," Dr. Dewey told the American.
The doctor pointed out that Sebring is strategically located for a
pleasure seeker, being far enough
South to avoid frost, and with sufficient altitude to make the summers comfortable. The city,
located in the South central part of the
State, is constantly swept by a
breeze from the Gulf or from the
Ocean. Mr. Dewey feels that
Sebring should capitalize on what God
gave it - its natural Lakes and rolling hills forming an ideal setting
for a national recreational center,
and he believes the city's future
lies in making life pleasant for
those who can afford to enjoy the
pleasures it offers, many of whom
wish to slip away from the teaming, throbbing life of a large industrial center for the quiet and
rest that can be found here.
