Melvil awoke early on Saturday December 26, 1931 at the Lake Placid Club Little LOJ in Lake Placid Florida. He was discussing Lake Placid Club issues with his wife Emily at about 6:30 AM when he suddenly slumpted over in his chair and lost consciousness. Dr. Alfred. T. Eide was summoned. At about 8:30 AM he regained consciousness momentarily, however, he was paralyzed on the left side. He lost consciousness again and passed away shortly there after. A memorial service was conducted at the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Placid. His body was then taken to Orlando for cremation. His ashes were then sent to Lake Placid New York where they were placed next to his first wife Annie Godfrey Dewey at The Lake Placid Club Adirondack Chapel. | Annie Died in the summer of 1922, at the age of 73 at her
home near Albany NY after attending a symphony concert and pyschology lecture with Emily
Beal. Acording to the story, they returned home, and Annie retired as she always did. At about 1 a.m. she rang for her nurse as she had done many times because of ill health. But by 2 a.m. she had passed away. In her typewriter was an unfinished poem to her husband. With her last breath she asked the nurse to give the poem to her husband. |
